Composition

By Asia Comans

A few summers ago, I decided to stop at some of my stomping grounds in my hometown of San Jose, CA.

This project stemmed from me needing a reminder of where I’ve been and how far I've come. It was just an overall reset I needed that turned into a therapeutic project full of everlasting memories.

9th STREET

I have some of my earliest memories at this place. I used to hate when my brother and sister left for school so I’d cry for them in that little window on the first floor there. Just imagine a nappy headed little baby with a full ass diaper crying her head off smh who let me??

THE PINK APARTMENTS

They were pink when we first moved in so the name just stuck. real OG’s remember this spot! SO many memories here! Like when I threw my 13th birthday party here (1 of many parties), or when me & my sister were real life fighting over a pair of her socks I wore (sibling fights, gotta miss them). Definitely my favorite spot I've ever lived.

THE GRASS

This one area was my playground. I had 2 cousins that stayed at the building behind us right there & I was constantly there. For a whole summer every morning I would practice riding my skateboard up and down the sidewalk and walkways. We used to have boxing matches or play tackle football in that grass since it was big enough for everyone to play and watch.

MINER

All my friends who lived in the pink apartments went to this school so my first day of 2nd grade was smoooooth. I had my first & only fight at this school in 6th grade, whew the memories. We used to chill at those benches during lunch sometimes. I also cherished the friendships that started here and lasted until high school.

OGHS

The best of the best were bred here along with lifelong friendships and memories. I dont know about y’all but my high school experience was great. My brother and sister paved the way for me to be unfuckwithable by the time I got there, so all the administration in the office knew my last name cus momma didn’t play no games. Everyone would be in Africa (where all the black kids hung out at lol) chillin then all of a sudden hear a loud ass smack from someone getting slapped in the back of the neck or every time I pulled out my phone to take a picture of someone, everyone else would hop in the picture so now we got a big ass group picture (photography was my destiny before I even knew!). The rival games against ST were easily ours for football but the basketball games were soooo damn intense. The best high school ever 🦅

NANA’S HOUSE

It was so clutch that my aunt lived right next to my high school. Real ones know this house too. My second home til this day. Christmas was my grandma’s favorite holiday so she used to always have the house decorated with her mini houses and Christmas decorations. Forever home.
